NewcastleGateshead hosts international women's conference

Around 2000 members of the world’s largest service organisation for women are in NewcastleGateshead today, for the Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland 72nd Federation Conference.

Jessica Roberts, Acting Head of Business Tourism and Membership at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau who helped to bring the event to the area said: “Hosting the Soroptimist International conference here in NewcastleGateshead is a real coup. An event of this scale will have a major impact on the local economy with the conference alone being worth in the region of £800,000.”

Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and Falklands veteran Simon Weston are among the speakers addressing the conference. Members will also hear from Pamela Goldberg, Chief Executive of British Cancer Care, International President, Lynn Punning and International Liaison for Project Independence, Dawn Marie Lemonds.

The organisation focuses on six programme action areas; human rights for all, education, health, environment, social and economic achievement, international goodwill and understanding. Soroptimists International’s vision is to be a global voice for women through awareness, advocacy and action. It has nearly 100,000 members across the world and is active in over 120 countries. Members are women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups who join local clubs to give service to others.
