?Groundbreaking technology? developed in County Durham

A high-tech County Durham company has raised £875,000 to develop revolutionary technology for the medical and security x-ray markets. Durham Scientific Crystals raised the cash from its partner company and major shareholder US technology investor Amphion Innovations, as well as institutions and private investors.

The Durham University spin-out company, based at NetPark in Sedgefield, say that they will use this latest capital injection to finance continued research and development, staffing and overhead expenses.

DSC’s new method of creating detectors for security screening and medical imaging will aid the move from analogue to digital x ray imaging. The company believe there is a huge range of possible applications for the “unique” technology and the potential global market is worth many billions of pounds.

Richard Morgan, chief executive of Amphion and a DSC director said: “Due to the recent security issues in our airports and the continued desire to diagnose and treat diseases earlier, there is a large, growing need for faster, more effective and clearer digital imaging. “We believe that DSC has the technology to meet these needs and this financing signifies that our investors and partners see DSC as a company poised for tremendous growth, and value the technology and recognise its prospects.’’

DSC, which currently has eight employees, plans to double staff numbers over the next six months. The new roles are intended to be highly skilled and well-paid jobs for PhDs and experienced engineers.
