£100,000 upgrade for South Tyneside Metro station

Modernisation work on one of South Tyneside’s Metro stations is set to start later this month. Tyne Dock station is to have its roof canopy upgraded, new lighting installed and get a fresh application of special anti-graffiti paint, all as part of the £100,000 renovation. Nexus, the Metro operator, says the investment in Tyne Dock will help to improve the passenger waiting environment at the station, which is used by some 380,000 passengers a year. The work will take around three months to complete and is scheduled to get underway from November 13.

Mick Carbro, Metro Director, said: “We’re busy making Metro a cleaner, brighter, better system and the work taking place at Tyne Dock station is part of that. “We know our passengers want a modern, safe and welcoming environment, wherever they catch their Metro from. This is a significant investment in the future of Tyne Dock.”

The work at Tyne Dock follows the £1.2 million upgrade of Pelaw station, on the same line, earlier this year. Next year will see the development of a whole new station at Simonside in South Tyneside, between Bede and Tyne Dock. The £3.2 million station will be the 60th on the system.
