Quayside's new addition revealed

The design of the “missing tooth” on Newcastle Quayside’s frontage has been revealed by property managers UK Land Estates. 57 Quayside, a new five storey office block, was developed by architects RyderHKS in conjunction with English Heritage. Archaeologists will begin working on site in December, and will continue excavations once the foundations are in place to secure the ground. Construction of the building itself is due to start on site in January.

Paul Seymour, architectural director at RyderHKS said: “We needed to consider how the new building might have developed if it had grown organically from the medieval burgage land pattern, so the design is based on a series of linear buildings. “We have taken full account of the history of the site whilst producing a design with a definite 21st century character.”

Catherine Dewar, English Heritage historic areas advisor said: “This is a crucial site on Newcastle’s historic Quayside and is the ‘missing tooth’ in the frontage to the river. “We have worked closely with the Council and RyderHKS designing a scheme which fits into the medieval grain of this part of Newcastle whilst still providing modern office accommodation.”

John Seager, UK Land Estates said: “There has been a lot of debate about the site and the design with English Heritage, CABE and the City Council. It has been a stimulating process and we are very pleased with the results. “The Quayside is a prestigious location and 57 will take its place there amongst other landmark buildings.”
