Development team for Baltic Campus announced
The professional team in charge of the design and construction of Gateshead College’s new £37m Baltic Campus on the Gateshead Quays has been announced. Building contractor Shepherd Construction will be working with architects Red Box Design and commercial property developers Terrace Hill.
The new campus is due to open early in 2008, and will encompass world-class buildings and state-of-the-art facilities representing growth and development in learning for both local communities and businesses. Around 15,000 students will be educated at the new campus each year and around 550 members of staff will be employed on site.
Nigel Moore, project manager at Shepherd Construction, said: “This is an important project for the area, not just Gateshead College. We want to be working with the best people and resources to help deliver a creative and dynamic scheme, which Gateshead can be proud of.”
The professional team have said that the campus will house state-of-the-art facilities and workshops which will blend with social areas, gardens, a theatre, performance studio, spa, bistros and cafes, providing “a comprehensive and dynamic place to study and work.”
Sean Gallagher of Red Box Design said: “The new campus will have a light and airy feel with a friendly public street face to encourage wider use from both the adjacent businesses and local community. When finished the Baltic Campus will provide an innovative building with a wide variety of educational uses.”
Terrace Hill project co-coordinator Ed Bell said: “I am delighted with the innovative design of the college. I believe it will set the tone for the development of the rest of the 1.5 m sq ft Baltic Business Quarter. The development is all about quality and the college is an excellent start to attaining that objective.”
