Academic Entrepreneurship...Moving Research Forward

Post-doc researchers, PhD’s and Alumni from Newcastle, Northumbria and Durham universities are being invited to take a look at their future careers. The City technology Office, in partnership with newcastle, Northumbria and Durham Universities have launched a regional networking and mentoring programme as a pilot for Newcastle Science City to introduce them to the opportunities in business and commercialisation. A focus group was held at which technology and science-related academics from these groups identified barriers between research and business. This programme seeks to remove these barriers by drawing upon the existing networks of start-up business support across the region.

In association with the Bridge Club, the programme will invite post-docs, PhD students, alumni and interested businesses to interact and hear from the experiences of post-doc researchers in our region who have built highly significant businesses based on the commercialisation of their intellectual property. These interactions will provide a platform for researchers with great ideas to utilise them in developing their futures. Businesses are invited to interact with these groups as business development opportunities and there will be opportunities in mentoring to support the most promising ideas.

This programme is a must for anyone who wants to

  • start a knowledge-based business
  • work with experienced business mentors
  • understand NE start-up support services
  • meet post-doc entrepreneurs and business intermediaries
  • combine technology with business know-how
  • meet day-to-day commitments while looking to the future
