Cinema ?Microplex? planned for Newcastle in December
Newcastle’s High Bridge Street will play host to three different ‘micro’ cinemas in December, offering people the opportunity to take a break from their Christmas shopping.
An Open Air Cinema will be screening films over the first two weekends in December as part of Glow, NewcastleGateshead’s international festival of light, taking place for this year’s Winter Festival. The cinema is located in the car park between Period Clothing and RPM, behind Waygood’s Little Jewel Cinema on High Bridge Street. The 1980’s classic feature film Tron will also be screened on Sat 8 December. Each evening a different film will be screened from 5pm - 9pm from Thursday 30 Nov to Sat 2 December and Thurs 7 December to Sat 9 December inclusive.
The Mobile Cinema, a 70’s caravan converted into a cinema, will be located on High Bridge Street, opposite Aitkin Brothers, and will also screen films from The Little Jewel Cinema programme. Waygood’s Little Jewel ‘Peephole’ Cinema, at 31 High Bridge Street, has a different film each week running between 10am and 10pm with films changing on a Thursday. Passers by can see films by ‘peeping’ through holes in an empty shop window.
Helen Smith, Director of Waygood Gallery and Studios, said: “We hope that these diverse and unusual ways and locations of watching films will brighten people’s winter evenings. From the ‘Peephole’ cinema, to the cosy Mobile Cinema caravan, to the excitement of watching films on a outdoor screen, we hope that there are films to appeal to all ages.”
