Newcastle's nightspots urged to 'be safe'

A scheme that recognises and rewards Newcastle’s nightspots looks set to grow in 2007 with more of the citiy’s pubs and clubs signing up than ever before. Launched by Safe Newcastle in conjunction with Metro Radio, the ‘Best Bar None’ initiative assesses pubs, bars and clubs on the policies and procedures put in place to reduce alcohol-related disorder and promote responsible drinking.

The premises that meet the stringent requirements of Best Bar None are awarded ‘accredited status’. Accredited venues then display the Best Bar None logo to show customers that they are using a venue that is committed to their wellbeing and safety. The finalists from the categories of Pub, Bar, Club and Lesbian and Gay venue then go forward to compete for the overall crown of Best Bar None in an award ceremony to be held early next year.

Cllr Gareth Cooper, Chair of Safe Newcastle, said: “The scheme is really important to Newcastle as we draw visitors from all over the UK and beyond for our nightlife. Visitors to the city will have a fun, safe night as so many of our licensed premises fully support the Best Bar None scheme. “We are expanding this year’s scheme to include the bars and pubs outside the city centre such as Jesmond and Gosforth.”
