Kids get helping hand for the future

Staff at Procter & Gamble’s (P&G’s) Cobalt Business Park site have been helping to get North Tyneside students “fit for the future” with a careers day on-site. Ten 16 year olds from the John Spence School in North Shields came along to the site to learn about possible future careers and gained an insight into the “world of work”. The students were given the opportunity to learn from P&G staff about their different jobs and the process of applying for a job with the company. The event, organised through North Tyneside Education Business Partnership (EBP), included a presentation about P&G, a quiz, mock interviews, and an opportunity to “shadow” a member of staff.

Julia Cantwell, development officer at North Tyneside EBP, said: “P&G hosted a great event – it really gave the students a realistic view of the workplace and, I think, encouraged them to consider the types of career that they might like to pursue. “You could see an immediate change in the pupils after their visit, they had all matured and were thinking more seriously about the jobs they would like to do when they are older. The visit to P&G was undoubtedly worthwhile for all who took part.”

Anne Perrin, Community Matters coordinator at P&G’s Cobalt Park site, said: “We’re always delighted to welcome local school pupils and show them the type of work we do here at P&G. “It’s great for students to appreciate the kind of quality of work and choice of careers that are here on their doorstep in the North East. “I hope they found the day educational and that it has given them an insight into life after school and some ideas for their future careers.”
