Strategy for women's enterprise launched

A strategy aimed at finding and nurturing the region’s future Margaret Barbours, Jackie Peddies and Chey Garlands has been launched this week. The Women’s Enterprise Strategy has been produced by One NorthEast to help close the ‘enterprise gap’ with other parts of the country and support the Regional Economic Strategy’s aim of growing the business base in the North East by an additional 22,000 businesses over the coming decade.

This strategy sets out why the increased participation of women in enterprise will make a difference to the region’s economy and how to make it happen. The RES identifies improved participation and economic inclusion as guiding principles for the region’s economic development, in particular highlighting that the people living and working in the North East are the region’s “greatest asset” and are key to its economic future. In spite of all the efforts to increase female entrepreneurship, levels of entrepreneurial activity remain just half that of the male roles.

One NorthEast Director of Business and Industry, David Allison, said: “The Agency is clear about the crucial role women have within the enterprise agenda, both in terms of participation and productivity and that they recognise the real opportunities that are out there. We have been actively working to increase the involvement of women in the North East’s economy. “We want to engage women in the enterprise agenda, support more people to help them set up in business and encourage businesses to access new markets, develop skills, ICT and lever in financial investment.”
