Sage flushed with pride

Gateshead Council is celebrating after being chosen to receive a prestigious Loo of the Year Award. Judges in the national Loo of the Year Awards 2006 agreed that the facilities at The Sage Gateshead were worthy of the award for the best loo anywhere in England at an entertainment venue. The council also won a Changing Places award for adult changing facilities, the first time that such an award has been presented and one of only eight to be awarded in the UK.

Peter Udall, Head of Design for Gateshead Council, says: “We are delighted to have won these awards. “There are many other spectacular aspects of the building which command attention – so it’s refreshing to receive an award for a relatively minor, though crucially important, part of the structure.”

Anthony Sargent, General Director at The Sage Gateshead, says: “This is not only a design award, it’s also very welcome recognition of the quality of our incredibly hard-working front of house, maintenance and cleaning teams. So often they are the unsung heroines and heroes of public buildings; we are enormously proud of their work, and thrilled to see it publicly acknowledged in this award.”

The award was announced at a lunchtime ceremony by ‘Loo of the Year’ at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham on Friday.
