Local games developers hit the bullseye

A North East games development company has stepped up to the oche to create what is becoming a very popular console game this Christmas. Newcastle-based Mere Mortals created PDC World Championship Darts for clients Oxygen Interactive and the game had a positive reception from retailers and trade alike – being placed at number two on the pre-order list on www.play.com a week before its release.

PDC World Championship Darts, which is the only darts game on PS2, offers users a realistic darts experience based on the PDC darts competitions and features look-alikes of ten of the world’s leading darts players including Phil Taylor, John Part and Alan Warriner Little. The project was a year in development for the Mere Mortals team and features the ‘voice of darts’, Geordie commentator Sid Waddell.

Mick Stockton, Operations Director said: “We had great fun during the development of this title, modeling and animating players who are at the top of their game. “Sid was very enthusiastic, adding many of his own takes on our original script. By the end of the recording session we had over four hours of non-stop Sid which still kept us in stitches through the final push of the development. We have no doubt there is a DVD release in there somewhere.”

David Jeffries, Managing Director of Mere Mortals group of companies said: “I’m extremely proud at how Mere Mortals tackled this title. “To receive the reviews we’ve had for the game in its first few weeks of release just inspires us to continue to excel at what we do.”
