Climbing the Monument

A famous Newcastle landmark is being opened to the public once more. Even though it is surrounded by a Festive Market and covered in Christmas lights just now, members of the public are being invited to climb to the top of Grey’s Monument.

For the last Year of Exercise and Sport (YES) city centre event, the City Council is once again opening Grey’s Monument to the public from 10am until 3pm on Tuesday 19 December. As well as enjoying the view of the City preparing for Christmas, the public can also have a go in the Newcastle Vipers slapshot speed cage and see if they can manage the hardest football shot. Everything is free and each participant will receive a promotional YES gift.

The Monument and its 164 steps proved popular with the public when it was opened as part of the YES Longest Day event in June, and another opening was arranged during autumn. Now the public are being given one last chance to get a little fitter as they climb to the top before, possibly, putting on a few pounds over the next couple of weeks.

Neil Ramshaw, Co-ordinator of the Year of Exercise and Sport said, “When we first opened the Monument to the public as part of the Year of Exercise and Sport it was quite clear that many people wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to look out over Newcastle from one of its most famous landmarks. “As the highly successful YES scheme comes to a close they have one more chance to do so, enjoying a unique view of the festive bustle as they do so.”
