Local teacher on TV for New Year's Eve

The experience of a group of Northumberland School pupils and one of their teachers is to be featured in a national review of the year being shown on ITV on New Year’s Eve. Creative Partnerships Northumberland took thirty students from Prudhoe High School and Tim Smith, design, technology and film studies teacher at the school, to the capital earlier this year to witness a stunning street theatre event organised by LIFT, the London International Festival of Theatre. Now Tim’s film footage and recollection of the experience is to be part of “I Was There – The People’s Review of the Year” on ITV1 at 10pm on December 31.

The pupils from Prudhoe High were the only group from the region invited to witness the amazing Sultan’s Elephant, a 40ft high mechanical creation made by French-based company Royal De Luxe for the festival. Tim’s footage of the creature impressed the festival organisers so much that they passed it on to television production company Endemol, who in turn asked if they could use it in the national TV review.

Tim said: “It was just the most amazing experience, none of us had ever seen anything like it. “I had to go down to London a couple of weeks ago and I was interviewed by newsreader Katie Dereham for the programme. “There’s only about six people being interviewed for the complete show so I’m really pleased that our experience is going to be featured. “We also gave the pupils a copy of all the edited footage so they have a lasting reminder of what was a once in a lifetime experience.”
