Gallery hopes to 'Draw' in crowds

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) opens its doors this month, allowing access to a new range of modern and contemporary art for the city. Designed by international architects Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects, the £19.2m landmark mima gallery will display a variety of artwork across five exhibition spaces. The gallery’s inaugural exhibition ‘Draw’ will feature some of the most significant artists of the Modernist era in relation to work by contemporary artists to create a display depicting the legacy of drawing. The artists featured include Picasso paired with Chantal Joffe, Matisse with Chris Ofili, Duchamp with Ceal Floyer, Pollock with DJ Simpson, and Andy Warhol with Gavin Turk.

Godfrey Worsdale, director of mima, said: “Our key messages are excellence and accessibility and we wanted to open with an exhibition that encompassed these core values. mima is a gallery that will showcase internally significant art right here in the North East and we wanted our opening exhibition to signal our intent and ambition.”
