Sunderland is Britain's top university for equality

The University of Sunderland has been named as the top university in Britain for equality and diversity in the national Workplace Equality Index (WEI). The WEI has been compiled by gay rights campaign organisation Stonewall. The index was originally created as a national benchmark showcasing Britain’s top employers for gay staff. The University of Sunderland is the only university in Britain to feature in the top 100. Sunderland appears alongside national companies such as Barclays Bank, British Airway and IBM, and public bodies such as the Home Office, the Disability Rights Commission and the Ministry of Defence.

Paul Andrew, the university’s equality and diversity manager, said: “We are delighted to be included in the top 100. All staff and students are valued in the University community. We are also working with local partners to send out a message that Sunderland is an inclusive city for all.”

Sunderland has previously been named one of the top 50 employers in the UK for equal opportunities by both the Times and national campaign group Opportunity Now.
