£1m injection from medical conferences

A trio of major medical conference wins for NewcastleGateshead could attract over 1,000 delegates and generate more than £1m for the region. The European Association for the Study of the Liver, the European Association for Cancer Education and the International Society on Priorities in Healthcare are all set to host their events in NewcastleGateshead in 2007 or 2008.

Professor Maggie Bassendine of Newcastle University, who helped bring the European Association for the Study of the Liver event to the region, said: “The fact that the organisation will be holding its two day conference in NewcastleGateshead next year reflects the contribution made by doctors in the medical school at Newcastle University to research into this liver disorder which affects many thousands of women over the age of 40. “This international conference will bring together researchers from around the world with an interest in finding the cause and improving the treatment of this particular type of liver disease.”

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of NGI, the destination marketing agency responsible for NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “This is a fantastic start to 2007 and demonstrates the strength of the medical research industry in the area. Business tourism is a rapidly growing sector which is becoming increasingly important to the region’s local economy as these conference wins demonstrate.”
