Climate Dome spreading the message
CarbonNeutral North East is using a £400,000 grant from DEFRA and further support from Scottish Power to spread the climate change message to people who may never previously have given the matter much thought. Climate Dome is touring shopping centres, shows, festivals, sporting events and schools for 15 months from January 2007 with environmental communicators on hand to help people understand the issues.
Climate Dome aims to make the complicated subject of climate change simple, locally relevant and immediate. CarbonNeutral North East hope that people will see climate change as important – a here-and-now issue for their lives and their region. Visitors to Climate Dome will be shown what they can do to help save both money and the planet.
Charlie Henderson at CarbonNeutral North East said: “Climate change is not an issue for the future, but one that needs to be tackled today if we’re going to make a real difference. “Research has shown that while people are aware of the terms ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’, understanding of the importance and immediacy of the issues is sketchy. “Climate Dome aims to change that by raising people’s awareness of the causes and effects of climate change and, most importantly, getting the message across to them about what they can do to reduce the impact in their area.”
