Right royal offer to Wills and Kate
A North East venue has offered its services as a possible location for the wedding of the country’s next king and queen. Newcastle Racecourse is offering its services for the big day, should Prince William pop the question to his girlfriend Kate Middleton. The racecourse believes it is the ideal place for a future royal couple to get hitched and would provide a rare occasion for a major national and royal event to take place in the region. The offer comes amid speculation that second-in-line to the throne Prince William will soon propose to 25-year-old Kate.
Dave Williamson, the racecourse’s executive director, said: “This is a serious offer. “In the North, we tend to miss out on these high-profile national celebrations, but this is a situation where we really can make a strong case. “The Royal family has a well known association with horse racing, which is, after all, the sport of kings. Her Majesty, like her late mother, is a keen race-goer and she has visited Newcastle Racecourse before. Also, Kate Middleton comes from County Durham mining stock, so a wedding in the region would be highly appropriate for her family. “I shall be writing to the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, as the Queen’s representative to make that case, for, as we say, `Shy bairns get nowt’.’’
Andrew Dixon, chief executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “It would be great public relations for the Palace to spread Royal weddings around the country and NewcastleGateshead would be an ideal location. And what better location for an Art History graduate to become the wife of the future King of England than the city which has just been named the UK’s Arts Capital?’’
