Regional brain drain put in reverse

The Newcastle tax practice of professional services firm Deloitte is hoping to reverse the traditional ‘brain drain’ from the North East by attracting expert personnel into the region from other major cities around the UK. The department’s recent growth and reported success has led to it being recognised by Deloitte at a national level as a primary example of the entrepreneurial approach that its UK tax teams should adopt. The team has recruited specialists from as far afield as Leeds, Manchester and even London to help service and expand its regional client base.

Stuart Cottee, head of the tax team, said: “The tax department has seen unprecedented growth in the last couple of years, growth that has seen us recognised internally on a national level. “With recent half year results indicating a 40 per cent increase in turnover we are not only attracting highly successful individuals from our region but from other areas of the country to work with us. “Such is our prediction for tax growth that we are looking to recruit a record number of graduates to the tax department in 2007, as well as experienced hires.”
