Walking with Giants

Following the successful recruitment of schools to participate in the ‘A Grand Idea…’ scheme, creative thinking and enterprise programme Giant Minds has secured funding to double the amount of pupils involved. ‘A Grand Idea…’ is a day long social enterprise and ideas generation workshop which culminates in pupils pitching their ideas to representatives from national charity Changemakers, who administer the National Lottery’s ‘Big Boost’, with the opportunity to secure £1,000 start-up funding.

Peter Hirst, Giant Minds manager, said: “Within a week of launching the program we had 600 pupils engaged. Now, within the first month we have dates confirmed with 14 schools and are set to work with over 2,000 pupils.”

The project is being carried out in partnership with, and is funded through, One North East’s Future Entrepreneurs Programme. Giant Minds had initially planned to work with 1,000 North East school pupils, but the outstanding response to the campaign has led One North East to fund a further 1,000 opportunities for young people.

Claire Aylett, Changemakers Head of Programmes, said: “Young person led initiatives are something that both Giant Minds and Changemakers are very passionate about and wholeheartedly believe in; that’s why this project was born, and why we feel confident it will succeed.”
