Archaeology dig ends

Archaeological excavations along the line of the proposed New Tyne Crossing have ended without any significant finds.

Councillor Tom Hanson, vice chairman of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority, said: “The lack of significant finds may be disappointing for history buffs, but is a relief to the TWPTA and supporters of the New Tyne Crossing. It means the project can now proceed as planned. “We had a statutory duty to undertake an archaeological investigation and, while we had it undertaken in plenty of time to allow for the possibility of recording anything of significance, we are satisfied that we can now go ahead with the New Tyne Crossing in the knowledge that the history of Jarrow and East Howdon will not be disturbed.”

A team of archaeologists from Durham University carried out the investigation, digging seven trenches – five in Jarrow and two near East Howdon.
