Children and Young People's Forum launched

A new forum to give children and young people the chance to put their views across on local issues is to be launched in Newcastle today. The Lemington and Newburn Children and Young People’s Forum is the first of its kind to be set up as part of the Newcastle Children and Young People’s Engagement Strategy.

The strategy was launched in November last year and is designed to ensure that the views of children and young people are taken into account as part of the council’s decision-making process. A key aim of the strategy is to “deeply embed the culture, practice and principles of children and young people’s active participation and engagement in how the council operates”.

The Lemington and Newburn Children and Young People’s Forum will give local youngsters the chance to feed in their views and ideas about issues in their area to the Lemington and Newburn Ward Committee. More than 80 children and young people from the Lemington and Newburn wards will be at today’s launch event.

Councillor Nick Cott, Executive Member for Children and Young People at Newcastle City Council, said: “Children and young people have very clear opinions and ideas about issues that affect them and their local communities. “Through the Newcastle Children and Young People’s Engagement Strategy we are making sure that their views are heard and taken into consideration when the council makes decisions.”

The Lemington and Newburn Children and Young People’s Forum will be launched at Lemington Centre Hall today between 11.30am and 4pm.
