Increase in Uni applications for STEM subects welcomed
Britain’s manufacturers have welcomed the publication of this year’s university entrance figures, which show a significant increase in the numbers of students applying for entry to science, technology and mathematics (STEM) related subjects.
Responding to the figures published by UCAS the manufacturers organisation EEF Northern believes that it is essential that the UK increases the numbers of students emerging from University with degrees which will prepare them for careers in science and engineering. EEF Northern believes this will ensure that the UK remains a high value economy and with the necessary supply of skills to drive breakthroughs in science and innovation.
Explaining the increase, EEF Northern pointed to the increase in tuition fees and a renewed focus by university entrants on employment prospects once they leave. This was backed by increases in subjects in addition to science and engineering which were more closely related to preparing people for the world of work.
Alan Hall, EEF Northern Director, said: “These figures give cause for optimism that the campaign to reverse the decline in science and engineering graduates may be bearing fruit. However, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels given the relentless manner in which our competitors are producing graduates of increasing quality. “As a nation our future is tied to our knowledge base and the focus on innovation. We must make sure that all young people are aware of the benefits, both financial and personal, that a technology related degree can bring. This will help ensure we have the supply of higher level skills that the economy needs.”
