Newcastle preps for Science Festival

The search for the world’s funniest joke, the chance to build a humanoid robot and an investigation into the mysteries of what attracts people to each other are some of the topics that will be featured as part of this year’s Newcastle Science Festival. The nine day programme, running from 10–18 March, will see over 100 events taking place at venues across the city.

Linda Conlon, Director of the Centre for Life and chair of the Newcastle Science Festival, said: “The Newcastle Science Festival showcases some of the excellent work in science communication and engagement undertaken throughout the Newcastle and Tyneside area. “We have an excellent mix of events; from exhibitions, debates and lectures through to hands-on workshops and school activities that will enthuse and engage a whole range of audiences including those who are simply curious about how science affects them and the vast majority of events are free of charge.”

Venues for Festival events include Seven Stories, Discovery Museum and the Centre for Life. This year’s Festival also includes visits from the BBC’s Kate Humble, Rough Science presenter Mike Bullivant and Brainiac’s Dr Bunhead.

Sarah Stewart, director of Newcastle Science City said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Newcastle Science Festival and its work promoting the message that science is interesting as well as good fun. Education and public engagement is a key part of our work at Newcastle Science City as we want to get more people enthusiastic about science and to pursue careers in this field. The festival will undoubtedly support us in achieving out aims.”
