Having a chuckle at work
Workers spend an average of 45 minutes every day having a good laugh, according to new research. A study of 1,000 office employees found that women giggle more than men - but older workers are less likely to find things to chuckle about.
The study, by online entertainment channel MSN Video, found the happiest workers in travel, hospitality and customer services. The fewest laughs were reported in sales and marketing, mainly because of “strict bosses and heavy workloads”. Most fun was generated by office banter among colleagues. However, some of those questioned admitted they had a chuckle at the expense of a customer, or even their boss.
Irish comedian Ed Byrne, who is working with MSN Video on a comedy project, said: “I consider myself lucky as I get to laugh on the job. “I certainly couldn’t stick it out in a serious office.”
