Walker sees 25m investment

Plans for a new £25m centre at the heart of Walker have been unveiled by Places for People – the UK’s largest housing and regeneration group – and Newcastle City Council. The plans, called ‘The Heart of Walker’, are part of the Walker Riverside Regeneration project and will see local residents benefit from a range of new shops, services, leisure and community facilities, as well as new affordable and supported housing. Construction is expected to begin in the next 18 months and will take up to five years to complete.

A programme of consultation with the local population is currently underway, to try to establish exactly what residents want from the new centre. A further series of events to encourage local residents, businesses, community organisations and public sector services will be held over the coming weeks, giving people the chance to air their views on the Heart of Walker project.

Helen Golightly, Corporate Project Manager for Walker Riverside at Newcastle City Council said: “The ‘Heart of Walker’ events are crucial for the residents of Walker. This is a real opportunity to find out what the options are, and for the community to have a say in what shops and services they need and want to see at the centre of their neighbourhood. “I would urge anyone, young or old, who is interested in the future of Walker to come along to these events and get involved.”

A full timetable of events will be available at the Fun Day on 24 February and will also be posted to every house in Walker. Anyone who wants more information about the ‘Heart of Walker’ project should contact Andy Eastwood on 0191 263 4826 or log on to the website www.walker-riverside.co.uk.
