NE business urged to go for equality

A new project to help educate employers and employees about equal opportunities and discrimination in the workplace is being launched at a conference this month by Equality North East.

The ‘Equality in Employment’ project launch will take place at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead on Friday 23 March. It will help address the barriers to employment equality in the region and promote the economic benefits of equal opportunities by providing two days free training and support to both SME employers and employees. The conference is free to attend and will also include workshops such as: Avoiding Discrimination, Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace and Creating Meaningful Equal Opportunity Policies and Procedures.

Elizabeth Reay, Chief Executive of Equality North East, said: “We are very excited about the launch of the ‘Equality in Employment’ project. It is set to run until March 2009 and we are confident that the first conference will be a great start to the project. We can offer North East SMEs – which includes the V&C and Social Enterprise sectors – free training and support across a wide range of equality and diversity issues. What we deliver will be tailored to the customer’s real equality and diversity needs. This is a great opportunity for the SME community and we would encourage all to get involved and make a difference. “We would encourage all businesses of all sizes and across all sectors to register for the conference and take the pledge and act as standard bearers and role models for the wider business community.”
