Gateshead students support Fairtrade Fortnight

Gateshead College is doing its bit to support Third World farmers by organising a series of activities for Fairtrade Fortnight (26 February – 11 March). Fairtrade Fortnight is the annual promotional campaign of the Fairtrade Foundation, which encourages people to buy products carrying the Fairtrade mark. Gateshead College students will be taking part in competitions and presentations and there will also be a selection of Fairtrade goods on sale at the events, which will take place at the college’s campuses on Durham Road, Low Fell, Team Valley and Gateshead International Stadium.

David Cheetham, Principal at Gateshead College, said: “We already have a variety of Fairtrade products on sale but we feel it is important to continue to promote the advantages of buying these products. There is still a need to educate people in how Fairtrade sales can benefit third world farmers and their communities.”

Gateshead has taken a number of steps towards using Fairtrade goods and the town was recently recognised as an official Fairtrade Borough. The town’s Fairtrade status is partly due to the efforts of companies and organisations like Gateshead College in providing Fairtrade product options.
