NE surgeon finds pen mightier than scalpel

A North East plastic surgeon is finding the lure of the pen mightier than the scalpel. NHS consultant Paul Baguley, 47, is taking a three-month sabbatical from hospital work to put the finishing touches to his first novel – and put pen to paper on the follow-up.

Paul, a consultant with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust, earned the two-book deal with London-based Corryan Publishing after honing his writing skills producing plays for a local theatre group. His first book, Goddesses, is a medical thriller examining mankind’s fascination with genetic improvement. It is currently in the hands of New York editor Melody Lawrence and should be available from bookshops by August. His second book, as yet untitled, is to be a prequel to Goddesses.

Paul said: “I’ve wanted to write a book for about 15 years – I’ve lost count of the times I’ve said it’s ‘something I want to do before I die’. In the past, I felt I didn’t have the experience or the energy to complete something that people would want to read. Now, the time is right.”

Paul is a consultant plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon at the University Hospitals of North Tees in Stockton and Hartlepool, where he specialises in breast reconstruction and hand surgery. He is also surgical lead with Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust for reconstructive surgery following skin cancer, supports the breast reconstruction work of Roger Brookstein at Darlington Memorial Hospital and performs plastic surgery privately at the Cleveland Nuffield Hospital.

Goddesses will initially be sold as a hardback through nationwide bookstore chain Waterstones and online from Amazon. For further information contact Paul Baguley on 07958 336320.
