Smokers given 'not after dark' warning
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have issued a stark warning to smokers in advance of tomorrow’s No Smoking Day. The service is reminding people that home fires caused by smoking are a major killer. The campaign is being backed by Wallsend-born actress Charlie Hardwick, who plays Val Lambert in Emmerdale.
In the last three years, nine people have died and 98 have been injured in Tyne and Wear as a result of fires caused by smoking materials including cigarettes, cigars and lighters. According to the service, many of these fires occur between 10pm and 3am, so the fire and rescue service is urging people to quit or take care when smoking at home, particularly in the evening.
Charlie Hardwick said: “Smoking is not only dreadful for your health but fires started by cigarettes are the biggest killers which is why it is important that people make sure their cigarettes are fully extinguished when finished. I urge everyone to kick the habit this No Smoking Day and to make sure they put that cigarette right out!”
Dave Simpson, assistant chief fire officer, said: “It is vital that smokers understand how dangerous smoking at home can be for their family and those they live with. Tobacco is designed to stay lit, so cigarettes and cigars can easily start an accidental fire, especially if you are sleepy or have been drinking alcohol. We are urging smokers either to kick the habit altogether, or to ensure that they always extinguish their cigarettes properly, especially last thing at night.”
