Ship management company sails into NE office
One of the world’s leading shipping management companies has moved to Tyneside and hopes to create 20 jobs in the next three years. Hanseatic Shipping Company Limited has opened a new office in the UK at Orion Business Park in North Tyneside.
The Cyprus based firm has chosen Newcastle as its Northern European office so that it can be close to the operational area of the majority of its ships in the North Sea and the Baltic. An inward investment team led by Tyne and Wear Development Company helped Hanseatic with its investment plans and played a key role in the company picking Newcastle instead of Rotterdam for its new base.
Philip Harwood, Hanseatic general manager, said: “Newcastle won hands down because of the availability of experienced and skilled labour in the maritime industries.” “The primary function of our regional offices is to improve our client services by locating well qualified staff closer to the vessels they manage, enabling them to visit the ships more frequently, so when we were looking for new office accommodation in Newcastle, good communications and ease of access were paramount.”
Paul Buie, manager, Tyne and Wear Development Company, said: “Hanseatic’s investment is another feather in the cap of the region’s maritime industry. We have a great tradition in shipping and we’re fortunate to have retained such a skilled work. Fresh investment like this is reviving the area’s reputation as a centre of excellence.”
