NE schoolgirl in bid for European chess glory

A student from Ponteland High School has been given the opportunity of a lifetime after being selected to represent England at the European Chess Championships in Dresden next month. It is the first time the North East region has had a representative at such an event.

17-year-old A-Level student Sophie Seeber will be competing in the women’s section, where she will be up against 9 of the top 20 ranked players in the world, including Antoaneta Stefanova, the 2004 World Champion from Bulgaria, and top seed Nadezhda Kosintseva from Russia. Her dad Martin, a history teacher, will accompany Sophie at the tournament, and they will both be blogging the experience on the Chess Tales website.

The tournament is an expensive affair, and Sophie would be delighted to hear from local businesses interested in sponsoring her. To date, she has received generous support from the Northumberland Chess Association, The English Chess Federation, and the Northumberland Juniors Chess Association.
