Safer work placements from NE business

An innovative web-based training system designed to keep school students safe during work experience placements is set to help a North East business continue its expansion. Dynamic Distance Learning Ltd (DDL) has created the Safe Learner Award programme in response to the increase in the number of work placements they believe will follow the rise in the school leaving age to 18 from 2008.

Students complete a number of online modules which relate to their individual placements, and specifically to the health and safety aspects of the work they are doing. National qualifications organisation EdExcel assesses the work done by the students on completion of their placements, and awards a certificate to recognise their successful completion of the course.

David Gardner, innovations director at DDL, says: “Work placements are becoming compulsory for all school students, so there is a real imperative for systems which keep them safe during this time in industry. The Safe Learner Award not only helps to do this, but gives the students a recognised qualification for the work they do in completing the course. “Offering this programme as an online resource makes it easy for both students and their host companies to access and utilise, and we are certain there will be a strong take-up as the number of placements increases.”
