Sunderland aces need racing start

A group of North East students are aiming to hit the heights with a Formula 3 racing car they have built themselves – but they need local businesses to help them stay in the driving seat. The Formula Student Racing team at the University of Sunderland have designed and built the car in their spare time as part of their Mechanical Engineering degree – but the fifteen-strong team needs local sponsorship to ensure that they go all the way at Silverstone in July.

Last year the team got in the top half of the competition out of 114 entrants at the international SU Formula Competition. This year they have designed a much lighter and faster car, and have a secret weapon in the form of 19 year-old Mechanical Engineering student Julie Liddle – the smallest and lightest member of the team who will be behind the wheel.

Dr David Baglee, project co-ordinator, said: “This year there’s no reason why we can’t finish in the top ten. “This is a chance for local businesses to get their logo on the car, which will be seen by thousands of people at the event, and also broadcast on the BBC.”

The Formula Student team will unveil their 2007 car at a special event at the Industry Centre, Wessington Way, Sunderland on Thursday March 29, from 5.45pm to 7.15pm. If you or your business would like to attend please contact Charlotte Emmerson on 0191 5153888, or email charlotte.emmerson@sunderland.ac.uk.
