Musical showcase at Sunderland's perfect pitch

Sunderland’s Stadium of Light will echo to the sounds of classical favourites this summer, when it hosts its first-ever major music concert. The Summer Music Spectacular will showcase the talents of the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra who will play light classical and film music on a specially constructed stage on the pitch.

The concert on 15 July marks a first for the Stadium of Light and at the same time allows the talented local musicians who make up Sunderland Symphony Orchestra a chance to showcase their talents. More than 60 musicians supported by a 50-strong chorus will appear at the event, supported by two leading professional soloists. The Orchestra is managed and promoted by Music For All, a charity originally created to help the community of Sunderland’s East End, and directed by its founding conductor, Rupert Hanson.

The concert at the Stadium of Light will feature many well-loved favourites and will include Dance of the Knights from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, which has become the “theme tune” of Sunderland AFC.

Rupert said: “I am delighted to be bringing the Orchestra and the Chorus to this great stadium. We have just completed a series of four concerts at Holy Trinity Church and the Stadium of Light concert is the first of our two big public performances this coming summer, the other being at The Sage in September.”
