?A Grand Idea? celebrates success

North East business people are being invited to celebrate the social enterprise activities of 2,000 young people from across the region. Giant Minds, an initiative managed by Newcastle based networking organisation The Bridge Club, has been delivering social enterprise workshops called ‘A Grand Idea’ across the region since January, engaging 2,000 young people aged between 12 and 15.

During these sessions the Giant Minds team has challenged each of the youngsters to think of a social enterprise that could benefit their school or local community. Having brainstormed a wide variety of ideas during the workshops, those deemed to have the most potential are now being implemented with the financial backing of a ‘grand’ thanks to grants from The Big Boost, supported and administered by national educational charity, ChangeMakers.

To celebrate the success of these budding social entrepreneurs an event is taking place tomorrow (Wednesday 18 April) between 11am and 2pm at Durham County Cricket Club. The day will be attended by Metro Radio DJ Anna Foster who will be presenting certificates and prizes of achievement to the children. Pupils will also be taking part in interactive enterprise activities, along with networking and listening to guest speakers.

The enthusiasm, commitment, foresight and undeniable talent these young people have demonstrated during ‘A Grand Idea’ is truly inspiring. “This is a real call to action for the business community to encourage these young people to feel a real sense of pride in what they have achieved. Businesses could also learn a lot from the youngsters who have taken the lead in improving their local schools and communities.”
