School has big ideas for MP visit

Children at Whickham Comprehensive are set to present their ‘big ideas’ to MP David Milliband, when he visits their school later this month. Mr. Milliband will visit the school on Friday 27 April, following a day of activities today which will see local organisations working with the children to encourage environmental thinking and enterprise.

Among those taking part will be Big Ideas, an organisation launched in 2003 to help stimulate innovation and enterprise within young people, individuals and existing businesses, which is based at the Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) in Sunderland.

Lisa Smith, Big Ideas Manager, said: “It is clear that David Milliband is set to be a very important and popular politician for this and the next generation. For the children to have the opportunity to present their ideas to a figure like him is fantastic. “We know through the work we do with the region’s young people that they have some astounding ideas on innovations for the future that will no doubt be of interest to Mr Milliband. In our workshop we’ll be working with them to develop their thoughts, and also abilities on how to convey them effectively.”

The events form part of the Future Entrepreneurs programme, ran in conjunction with One North East, which aims to increase the number of entrepreneurs in the region by working through schools, parents, young peoples’ groups and the media to ensure that enterprise is seen as an attractive and realistic career option.
