New campus proves its worth for Gateshead College

Gateshead College has seen a significant rise in full-time applicants following its announcement to build a brand new £37 million campus at the Baltic quayside. The college has reported a 43 percent rise in the number of students enrolling on full-time courses compared to the same period last year. The news reinforces the results of research commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills which reveals that investing in new college buildings encourages more people to enrol.

David Cheetham, Gateshead College’s principal, said: “We are experiencing a surge in students applying for full-time courses and we are putting that down to the considerable investment across all of our sites.”

The college has invested more than £60 million in its Automotive and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence at Team Valley, the Academy for Sport based at Gateshead International Stadium and the Baltic Campus, based at the Baltic Business Park. The new campus, due to open in January 2008, will feature contemporary buildings with state-of-the-art facilities. Around 15,000 students will be educated at the new campus each year and around 500 members of staff will be employed on site.
