Tyneside firm wins scientific work in Australia

An innovative Tyneside company has recently completed a major hi-tech project in Australia after visiting Melbourne and Sydney on a trade mission. Following a comprehensive pre-qualification phase by Major Projects Victoria, Merit Merrell Technology were selected to competitively tender for the fit-out works of the first beamline cabins at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne and were subsequently awarded the £400,000 contract on the project.

The Synchrotron is a large machine which accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light, creating an extremely bright light which is channelled down the beamlines to experimental workstations, where it is used for research analysing the basic structure and matter of materials.

The company is already expanding into the European Union and has previous experience of business in the United States and Asia. They have also secured two contracts for the British Antarctic Survey team (contracted through Morrison Construction), one of which is for the new Halley VI Research Base.

Business Development Director Chris Berriman said: “After only 18 months of having a presence in Australia, Merit have successfully completed two prestigious contracts and have just commenced a third. Remarkably, they are in three different states in three different applications, being physics research (Victoria), semiconductor (New South Wales) and pharmaceutical (South Australia).”
