Jobs boost for region's customer service sector

EDF Energy’s Sunderland-based customer service centre is expanding its operations. Recruitment is under way to create around 200 additional jobs at the centre. EDF Energy’s operation at Doxford International Business Park is the largest centre it has in the UK. It provides customer contact and billing services for residential and small business customers across the country.

The company is committed to providing career opportunities and a great place to work for its employees. At the end of last year EDF Energy was named Durham and Wearside Employer of the Year in the Portfolio Business Awards and this latest announcement will take the number employed by the company in Sunderland to more than 1,400.

Steve Hayfield, EDF Energy director of account and revenue management, said: “Our business is growing and we need to increase our resource base to ensure we continue to provide great service to our customers. The investment we are making in Sunderland demonstrates the value we place on the operation we have here and the ongoing commitment we have to support the economic growth of the region.

Councillor Bob Symonds, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “This is fantastic news, demonstrating EDF Energy’s long-term commitment to Sunderland following 10 highly successful years in the city. “We have worked closely with EDF Energy over the years and are delighted to help them create a further 200 jobs. The city is proud of its reputation as a prime location for blue chip companies and EDF Energy’s announcement yet again reinforces this message.”
