New college designs showcased to public

Plans to create a £6m sixth form college next to Sunderland University have been showcased at a public consultation exhibition. The exhibition of project proposals illustrated plans for the three storey St Peter’s Sixth Form College, which has been designed by Darlington-based Browne Smith Baker architects on behalf of The City of Sunderland College.

A planning application has been submitted for the proposed building which has a curved roof to reflect the design of the existing University’s St Peters Campus. The new college, which will be the first in Britain to be built on a university campus, will accommodate 600 staff and students and will house IT areas, laboratories, catering facilities for the public and college, workshops, student support facilities and staff accommodation.

John Dixon, associate director at Browne Smith Baker, said: “This sixth form college will further promote Sunderland as an excellent seat of learning. The building has been designed around a central atrium, an impressive three storey space providing easy links from floor to floor as well as open exhibition areas and meeting places for students and staff.”

The site – currently a car park which serves Sunderland Science Park – overlooks St Peter’s Church which has been nominated for World Heritage Site Status.
