Newcastle named Best City in the North

Newcastle has been named the “Best City in the North” according to readers of a national newspaper. Newcastle took 35% of the vote in a poll by Daily Telegraph readers, ahead of Liverpool with 30%, Manchester with 18%, followed by Sheffield, Leeds and Birmingham. The Daily Telegraph began its poll last month with reports on each of the competing cities encouraging readers to vote.

Newcastle’s report concluded: “Newcastle is often underplayed by the country but it is so special. It has the history, culture and heritage second to none and after a decade of regeneration I think it has never looked better… “Many of the shipping premises and factories have been replaced by imposing new offices, residential developments, award-winning restaurants and uber-groovy bars on both banks of the river.”

In addition, NewcaslteGateshead was last week named the UK city in which parents would most like to bring up children, according to a survey by Reader’s Digest magazine.

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “These are all tremendous accolades to receive. They raise our profile as a desirable destination to visit and live and could help encourage many more people to see for themselves what we have to offer.”
