Newcastle College wins Beacon Award

Businesses from across the region recently joined Newcastle College in celebrating the receipt of its national Beacon Award for College Engagement with Employers sponsored by the Learning Training and Skills Council (LSC). Newcastle College won the accolade for its outstanding work with employers including its newly developed Contact Centre which has resulted in 933 companies benefiting from training for nearly 7,500 employees.

Launched in 1994 by the Association of Colleges (AoC) and sponsored by the Basic Skills Agency, the annual Beacon Award recognises and rewards outstanding teaching and learning, which enhances and enriches the experience of learners.

Dr. Michael Motley, Director of Business Engagement at Newcastle College, said: “We are delighted to have won the Beacon Award. Staff in the Directorate of Business Engagement have worked extremely hard to meet the needs of companies and to be recognised for our efforts on a national scale is fantastic. “So many individuals have benefited from training and the fact that we offer a completely flexible approach to learning means that we are able to accommodate individuals work patterns and home commitments so they can study at a time and pace to suit them.”

Chris Roberts, Regional Executive Director at the Learning and Skills Council Tyne and Wear said: “Winning this award demonstrates that the provision offered by Newcastle College is both flexible and responsive to the needs of employers. This will be critical in the years ahead if the region is to rise to the challenge of delivering world class skills that will enable the UK to compete with the best in the world.”
