North East journalists named as front-runners for press awards

Journalists from nearly 20 news organisations throughout the North East are in the line-up for this year’s Tom Cordner North East Press Awards, the largest regional media event in the UK. Reporters, specialist writers, sub-editors, photographers and their editors, from North Yorkshire to Northumberland, sent in 280 entries for the 26th annual Cordner contest. The total is slightly up on last year and more than 60 of them have made it to the short-lists, published yesterday.

Rod Sibbald, Chairman of the judges, said: “All of those on the short-lists deserve congratulations on being in contention for the prizes, because that is a significant achievement in itself among work of such good quality overall. The communities of the North East are very well served by their local press, and it’s no surprise that the national media often follow up the stories that the region’s papers run first.”

The keenist competition came in the categories for Hard News and Photography, both with more than 30 entries. Nearly as many journalists put up material for each of the Young Journalist, Feature Writer, and Scoop of the Year titles.

Broadcaster Jeremy Vine is the guest speaker at the Cordner awards night on 12 May at Newcastle Civic Centre when the winners will be announced. Tickets are available from Cordner committee chairman Bernice Saltzer at Sorted PR on 0191 265 6111 or bernice@sortedpr.com.
