Region's creative worlds collaborate

North East filmmakers and musicians are being given the opportunity to collaborate in a unique scheme aimed at bringing the two creative worlds together. The Sound & Vision project, created by Northern Film & Media and Generator North East, the region’s music development agency, will give six filmmakers the chance to produce an original one-minute film inspired by a piece of music composed by a regional musician.

From today, filmmakers will be invited to visit the Northern Film & Media website (www.northernmedia.org) and listen to ten regionally produced, one-minute music clips. They will be asked to submit their ideas to Northern Film & Media by 31 May 2007, with six films produced with score for a budget of £500. The six films will then be shown on the Northern Film & Media website and put to a public vote, with the winning film and score awarded £3000. A gala screening will take place this autumn showcasing the final productions.

Tom Harvey, Chief Executive of Northern Film & Media, said: “We’re hoping that this scheme leads to North East musicians producing scores for regionally made films and equally that filmmakers might be interested in producing promotional videos for local bands. It is very exciting that this is happening in the North East of England, and it has been great for us as an agency to work collaboratively with Generator North East.”

Regional musicians were asked to submit a one-minute clip of original music for the project earlier this year. Ten clips were selected by Northern Film & Media and Generator North East.

Sound & Vision is open to directors, writer/directors or producers and production companies attached to a director based in the North East region. Applicants must be over 18 and not in full-time or undergraduate education. Details of how to apply, guidelines and an application form are available from the NFM website at www.northernmedia.org. The deadline for completed film ideas is Thursday 31 May.
