FHM's got a lot of bottle

The build up to National Recycling Week, which starts on Monday, is being headed up in the North East by community regeneration specialist Frank Haslam Milan (FHM). The compnay is collecting its glass water bottles which will be transformed by Sunderland’s National Glass Centre (NGC) into a contemporary piece of art for FHM’s newly refurbished office in Deptford, Sunderland.

FHM North East’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team has introduced a number of initiatives to reduce the company’s impact on the environment. By exploring new methods for waste disposal the firm is now recycling up to 85% of its site waste, compared to an industry average of 50%.

Carla Fisher, Marketing manager, said: “Working closely with local communities we have a responsibility to their well being and the environment. Through this unique project with the NGC we hope to raise awareness to the importance of recycling and demonstrate how easy it is for companies to do their bit.”

Stephanie Moore studio co-ordinator with the NGC added: “This is an exciting project which touches upon topical and current issues. We haven’t worked with recycled glass before but are confident that we will be able to produce an original piece of art for FHM, which will act as a reminder of the importance of recycling.”

FHM North East is also looking at delivering an environmental community programme, targeting the residents, schools and groups neighbouring its sites across the region. The ‘Funky Junk’ Arts Project workshops will cover a broad range of topics including waste disposal, recycling, pollution, climate change, renewable energy and environmental crime. Participants are invited to use recycled rubbish to create unique pieces of art.
