Management honours for North East's voluntary sector

Managers from some of the North East’s leading voluntary sector organisations have received honours at a special presentation in Murton. 48 managers achieved an NVQ in Management at level three or above as a result of Project North East’s “Building Capacity in Voluntary Organisations” (BCVO) programme.

The managers work for a wide range of voluntary and community organisations across the region, including an organisation that provides respite care and support for families affected by autism based in Stockton-on-Tees, an agency that promotes the interests of young people in Sunderland, and a regional children’s charity based in Newcastle. They received their NVQ qualifications from Roger McCartney, Regional Manager of the Chartered Management Institute.

PNE’s BCVO programme is designed to develop management skills and meet specific challenges within community and voluntary sector organisations. Meeting a demand from the sector for NVQ qualifications at level three and above, the BCVO programme also enables managers to achieve their qualification without the costs of providing a paper based study file. The programme, which covers essential topics ranging from fundraising to training on good governance, has helped over 160 managers achieve their NVQs since 2002 with a further 140 managers currently working towards their NVQ through BCVO courses in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Co. Durham, and Tees Valley.

Tracey Moore of Project North East said, “PNE has worked closely with the voluntary and community sector for 14 years to provide programmes for development which are relevant, interesting, informative and fun. The sector is undergoing significant change, and it’s more essential than ever that organisations are well managed.”
