National Recycling Awards target SMEs for 2007

The National Recycling Awards, which reward best practice in the public and private sector, this week announced the introduction of a new award for 2007 specifically aimed at small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Small Businesses Recycling Initiative award is open to all companies with less than 250 staff that show a commitment to recycling and waste minimisation.

Recognised as a stamp of excellence in the recycling industry, the National Recycling Awards were set up eight years ago by Materials Recycling Week to acknowledge and reward waste reduction and recycling initiatives among UK companies and organisations.

Jane Rayner, group editor of Materials Recycling Week and chair of the judging panel, said: “SMEs that recycle will be well aware of the economic, reputational and social benefits of green initiatives – and the doubling of the landfill tax is no doubt an added incentive. When we judge this new award, we will be looking for evidence of recycling and waste reduction initiatives within an SME and want to know how these policies have been communicated to staff, customers and suppliers.”

The entries will be judged in September by a panel of industry professionals. Winners will be presented with their awards at a prestigious black-tie awards ceremony at the Telford International Centre on 14 November 2007.
