Sharing lifts and saving the environment
One of the founder members of the Go For Jobs campaign is taking part in National Liftshare Day this Thursday to highlight the importance of transport to the region. Staff from the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) will be working together to cut the numbers of journeys made by road to its offices across the North East.
It is estimated that people who car share on a regular basis save themselves around £1,000 and one tonne of carbon dioxide every year. The NECC hope that backing the annual awareness-raising day will help to show that businesses can play their role in reducing car usage in the North East.
Andrew Sugden, NECC director of member relations, said: “If everybody made a point of car-sharing at least once a week we would see an immediate 20% drop in the numbers of vehicles on the roads so this initiative can have a sizeable impact. The North East faces a number of challenges if it is to continue with the impressive growth seen in recent years. One of the most important is the impact of rising numbers of road users. The Government has a role to play in giving this region a 21st century roads infrastructure and, in return, the people of the North East need to take a different attitude towards public transport and journey-reducing initiatives such as car sharing.”
